Digitising the numismatic collection at Friedenstein Castle, Gotha
With 145,000 objects, the Numismatic Collection is one of the largest collections at the Friedenstein. As part of the Gotha transdigital project, the numismatic objects in the Numismatic Collection are also being digitised. Between January 2022 and December 2023, 79,000 objects were recorded in 2D and an additional 1,000 selected coins and medals in 3D. This was carried out in collaboration with the media service provider Julius Fröbus GmbH, which created the digital copies, and the Thuringian University and State Library in Jena, which is also providing support in the area of data logistics and data storage in the next phase of the project. In addition to recording the technical data, the previous digital documentation also included recording the location. The recording of the locations of the individual objects on the shelves using QR codes will be continued. In the second phase of the project, selected areas of the collection will be catalogued in greater depth according to current scientific standards. Enriched with standardised data, these objects can be shared with national and international numismatic databases and thus contribute to an even greater visibility of the collection. As in-depth cataloguing is very time-consuming and the project's aim is to publish as many digitised items as possible, work is being carried out in parallel on basic entries. Only the essential core data is given here, but the object can be found via a referenced permalink.
