Abstract:
The sexual problems of an apprentice guard at a sleepy rural railway station during World War II are balanced by the exploits of the station guard resolved to do as little work as possible. The authority figure, the station master, is eccentrically ineffectual. Although the Resistance ultimately beckons, this tragic-comic tale with its distinctively wry humour, adapted by the author from his stream-of-consciousness novel, was the culmination of an anti-heroic trend in the 'New Czech cinema' of the sixties. Menzel's film has a clear political sub-text - the placing of the private concerns of the hero ahead of ideology or politics (a colleague has spoken of Menzel's identification with his hero) was itself a political gesture winning the film an Oscar and prohibition after the Soviet invasion in 1968
