1907-1910 Privatdozent an der Univ. Greifswald. 1912-1914 Professor der Geographie an der Universität Basel. 1918 wurde er auf den Lehrstuhl für Geographie der Universität Greifswald berufen. Im Jahre 1930 war er Rektor der Universität Greifswald. Gründer der Zeitschrift "Erde und Wirtschaft" (Westermann).
